{"id":1442,"date":"2015-12-30T18:38:42","date_gmt":"2015-12-31T01:38:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/?p=1442"},"modified":"2016-10-08T13:59:57","modified_gmt":"2016-10-08T19:59:57","slug":"12-30-15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/2015\/12\/12-30-15\/","title":{"rendered":"12-30-15"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/DSC09664_365-1_123015_SH_TON.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1443\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1443 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/DSC09664_365-1_123015_SH_TON.jpg\" alt=\"DSC09664_365-1_123015_SH_TON\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/DSC09664_365-1_123015_SH_TON.jpg 1500w, http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/DSC09664_365-1_123015_SH_TON-200x133.jpg 200w, http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/DSC09664_365-1_123015_SH_TON-900x600.jpg 900w, http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/DSC09664_365-1_123015_SH_TON-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/DSC09664_365-1_123015_SH_TON-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Day 364 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dixmoor,_Illinois\">Dixmoor, IL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are a few reasons to do a 365 project. \u00a0One is to learn the craft. \u00a0Another is to build up a body of work. \u00a0The one that I got the most out of was finding my voice.<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merlinmann.com\/\">Merlin Mann<\/a> quotes is &#8220;content is king, but voice is queen.&#8221; \u00a0 I think he said it on the <a href=\"http:\/\/5by5.tv\/b2w\">Back To Work<\/a> podcast. \u00a0The point is that you can put out a ton of stuff online, but if you aren&#8217;t saying anything, then what is the point? \u00a0Having a voice, actually saying something, that makes the content valuable.<\/p>\n<p>Through this project, I started to find my voice. \u00a0I started figuring out what I wanted to say. \u00a0When I started to develop\u00a0a style, I wasn&#8217;t sure why I was shooting what I was shooting. \u00a0I knew I liked what I was shooting, but the reasons behind it hadn&#8217;t taken yet. \u00a0Why did I care about falling-down barns or burned out buildings, alleys and graffiti, homes that were falling down? \u00a0Why was I interested in places boarded up with plywood? \u00a0Was it nothing more than ruin porn?<\/p>\n<p>It turns out that there is actually a reason behind it. \u00a0There is something to it\u00a0that makes me want to seek out more, that puts some emotion and interest behind it. \u00a0Some of that is going to be collected in a new project, some of it will be a continuation of what I&#8217;ve been doing.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve had cameras for years. \u00a0I had a 35mm film camera when digital was just becoming a market. \u00a0I&#8217;ve almost always had a digital camera of some sort (aside from the one on my phone) since 1998. \u00a0But this was the first year I&#8217;ve ever shot with intention. \u00a0And from that intention, I finally figured out what I wanted to say with it.<\/p>\n<p>For the most part, I think it&#8217;s come though. \u00a0I have more to go, so I&#8217;m not ready to write an &#8220;artist&#8217;s statement&#8221; here.
