{"id":1641,"date":"2016-02-05T11:09:05","date_gmt":"2016-02-05T18:09:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/?p=1641"},"modified":"2016-11-10T11:55:05","modified_gmt":"2016-11-10T18:55:05","slug":"02-05-16-return-to-the-scene-of-the-crime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/2016\/02\/02-05-16-return-to-the-scene-of-the-crime\/","title":{"rendered":"02-05-16 &#8211; Return To The Scene Of The Crime"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/710_4026_365-1_HDR_020416_TON.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1642\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1642\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/710_4026_365-1_HDR_020416_TON-900x600.jpg\" alt=\"710_4026_365-1_HDR_020416_TON\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/710_4026_365-1_HDR_020416_TON-900x600.jpg 900w, http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/710_4026_365-1_HDR_020416_TON-200x133.jpg 200w, http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/710_4026_365-1_HDR_020416_TON-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/710_4026_365-1_HDR_020416_TON-1024x682.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/710_4026_365-1_HDR_020416_TON.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Day 36 \/ 401 &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Does this place look familiar? \u00a0Ten days ago, I posted a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/2016\/01\/01-26-16\/\">bad photo<\/a>\u00a0of this house with it&#8217;s roof caved in. \u00a0I drove past it yesterday and decided to give it another shot, under different lighting conditions. \u00a0This is the result, and it&#8217;s much better.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing is that it&#8217;s less cluttered, less busy. \u00a0I zoomed in quite a bit, leaving out a lot of the trees in the background. \u00a0Since this is a black and white photo, sometimes more things in the scene take away from what you are trying to show and say to begin with. \u00a0Actually, most of the time that&#8217;s the case. \u00a0The less things I have in a photo, the better the photo tends to be. \u00a0For example, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jamesgralian.com\/365\/2016\/01\/01-01-16\/\">this<\/a>. \u00a0Tree, shed, clouds. \u00a0It is exactly what that road is, lonely. \u00a0More would have meant less. \u00a0More stuff would have meant less feeling.<\/p>\n<p>Back to this photo. \u00a0I did a little darkening of the background trees, so they were less emphasized. \u00a0In a darkroom, this is called dodge and burn, but this was done in software. \u00a0Simple and effective, without changing the overall nature of the image.<\/p>\n<p>I took another shot that was much more square to the house, but you didn&#8217;t get the depth of the damage. \u00a0With this, you see how big the house it, and you can see inside the roof a bit.<\/p>\n<p>The soft light of the cloudy day meant that there were less harsh shadows to contend with, so there was less need to bump up certain parts and pull back others. \u00a0Less manipulation to get the scene. \u00a0Soft light and hard light both have their place. \u00a0This was a better scene for the soft light.<\/p>\n<p>The simplification was the most important part. \u00a0If I had zoomed out more, the house would have competed with the trees and moss, so the focus would have been pulled from what I was trying to show and say (like the previous attempt). \u00a0If I had zoomed in more, the scale would have been lost, and the setting would have been taken away. \u00a0That&#8217;s just framing, but it was a part of the composition of the shot.<\/p>\n<p>I took several shots from three different angles. \u00a0I looked at them later to decide which I liked best, which is a\u00a0major advantage of digital. \u00a0I can take a ton of shots and evaluate later with little to no added cost. \u00a0But more important was looking at the bad photo, seeing what didn&#8217;t work, and deciding to get a better shot later and how to do it. \u00a0The bad shot led to the good shot.<\/p>\n<p>Which is to say, keep shooting. \u00a0Evaluate the bad, the &#8220;failures,&#8221; and work towards getting better results. \u00a0The vast majority of my shots are misses. \u00a0I get the luxury of only showing off my hits. \u00a0But if it weren&#8217;t for the misses, I wouldn&#8217;t get the hits in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Day 36 \/ 401 &#8211; Does this place look familiar? \u00a0Ten days ago, I posted a bad photo\u00a0of this house with it&#8217;s roof caved in. \u00a0I drove past it yesterday and decided to give it another shot, under different lighting conditions. \u00a0This is the result, and it&#8217;s much better.
